How do I know it's bed bugs and not something else?+
The typical signs are: bites in a line or cluster that you notice after waking up (they bite exposed skin while you sleep), small dark spots — their droppings — in mattress seams, the bed frame or the headboard, and sometimes blood spots on the sheets. The adult bed bug is about the size of an apple seed (~5 mm), brown and flat. During the day it hides in seams, furniture joints and cracks near the bed, which is why you almost never see it in the act.
Why do bed bugs come back after a treatment?+
This is the most common complaint from someone who already paid for a service that didn't work. It usually happens for two reasons: only what was visible got treated, not the eggs (which resist many insecticides), or the treatment was applied to the bed but not to the hidden hotspots (furniture joints, baseboards, behind the headboard) where they re-emerge from. That is why the cycle is broken with targeted heat where chemicals can't reach, plus a follow-up visit timed to when the surviving eggs hatch. Without that, it looks like you won — and two weeks later they reappear.
How does heat treatment work?+
Bed bug eggs resist many insecticides, but not heat. SAR Control de Plagas applies targeted heat — high-temperature steam and heat guns — directly into seams, joints and cracks where eggs, nymphs and adults hide, combined with vacuuming and high-temperature washing and drying of textiles. We do not 'cook' the whole house at once; we treat focus by focus and combine it with targeted products and growth regulators for lasting effect.
Do I need to throw away my mattress and furniture?+
Almost never. With certified encasements that seal the mattress, plus heat treatment and vacuuming, most furniture can be saved. Throwing a bed out is not only costly — replacing a bedroom runs into the thousands — it often spreads bed bugs to other rooms or to neighbors. Before discarding anything, it is worth having SAR evaluate what can actually be recovered.
Do bed bugs transmit disease?+
Based on available evidence, no. While many microorganisms have been detected in bed bugs, and they can carry some in lab conditions, no research has shown they cause disease transmission in people. That does not make them harmless: bites itch and can become infected from scratching, and above all they affect sleep and mood — insomnia, fatigue, anxiety, and the embarrassment that often delays people from seeking help. Treating them promptly matters for both physical health and peace of mind.
Is the bed bug the same as the 'kissing bug'? Can it give me Chagas disease?+
No, and the difference matters. The bed bug (Cimex) lives in the bed and furniture, bites exposed skin while you sleep, and according to available evidence does not transmit disease. The 'kissing bug' (triatoma) is a different insect — larger, with a cone-shaped head — that typically bites near the face and hides in wall and roof cracks, especially in homes with damaged walls or roofs. That insect CAN transmit Chagas disease (the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi), which is present in several regions of Mexico. Transmission is not from the bite itself but from the insect's feces entering through the wound or mucous membranes — so never crush it against your skin or scratch the area. If you think you see one, do not touch it with your hands: cover it or capture it in a jar and report it to a health unit. How many visits are needed?+
Typically 2 to 3 visits spaced about 14 days apart. That interval is not arbitrary — it matches how long it takes for eggs that survived the first treatment to hatch, so the next visit catches the new nymphs before they reproduce. Skipping follow-ups is the most common reason the problem returns.
What can I do to help the treatment work better?+
It helps a lot to: wash and dry bedding and nearby textiles at high heat, not move mattresses or furniture to other rooms (that spreads the problem), reduce clutter around the bed to remove hiding spots, and not apply over-the-counter insecticides before the evaluation — they scare bed bugs into scattering, similar to what happens with cockroaches. How is the cost determined?+
After the inspection. It depends on how many rooms are affected, the infestation level, and how many follow-up visits are needed. Is the treatment safe for children and pets?+
Yes. Heat treatment is a physical method — steam and hot air — with no broadcast chemical application. Where targeted products are used, they are applied precisely in cracks and seams where children and pets cannot reach.
