Why is the German cockroach the #1 pest in food businesses?+
Because it is barely visible. It measures 11-16 mm and lives tucked into cracks as small as half a millimeter in kitchens: under the refrigerator, behind the stove, inside equipment. By the time you see one, there are usually many more hidden. In a food business the cost is not just the pest itself — a visible infestation during a health inspection can lead to observations, fines or suspension. That is why it is worth addressing before it becomes obvious.
How high is its reproductive potential?+
Very high. The egg-to-adult cycle takes about 6-8 weeks, and each female produces several egg cases (oothecae) with dozens of nymphs each. Annual offspring estimates vary widely by source — academic sources cite anywhere from hundreds to over 30,000 individuals from one female and her descendants. The exact number matters less than the order of magnitude: under favorable conditions the population grows very fast, much faster than the American cockroach. That is why late control is so difficult.
Why does DIY insecticide fail?+
Three reasons: (1) they are highly nocturnal, so when you spray, they are not out; (2) common insecticides repel them — the roach detects the product, flees, and the colony scatters, appearing in more places than before; (3) an egg case keeps hatching afterward. Killing the ones you see does not solve it. You have to reach the nest without scaring them off.
Why doesn't SAR use traditional fumigation?+
Because with the German cockroach, it is counterproductive. Repellent insecticides give a fast, visible knockdown, but the survivors detect the product and flee — the colony fragments and reappears elsewhere. Where exactly does the German cockroach live?+
Kitchen cracks: under and behind the refrigerator (the primary spot), behind the stove, under and inside the dishwasher, inside cabinets, utility openings (water, gas, electrical), outlets, door hinges, window frames, gaps between tiles, ducts and pipes. It seeks warm areas (27-28°C is optimal) and humid areas.
How small is the crack it hides in?+
0.5 mm is enough. Your eye cannot see a 0.5 mm crack — the cockroach can. That is why control is so difficult. Every crack needs sealing, not just the big ones. A single unsealed 0.5 mm crack leaves an isolated colony reproducing while you treat everywhere else.
How do I identify a German cockroach infestation?+
Indicators include: (1) small dark, powder-like droppings (especially under the fridge and behind the stove), (2) egg cases — dark brown capsules about 8 mm, rectangular, (3) a characteristic musty odor, (4) nighttime sightings (use a flashlight in the kitchen at night — they are highly nocturnal). During the day you almost never see them.
Why is weekly monitoring mandatory?+
Because the egg-case cycle is about 35 days. An egg case laid today hatches in 35 days with 30-48 new nymphs. Without monitoring: weeks 1-3 show low visible population, weeks 4-5 bring an explosion of new nymphs from hatching egg cases. Without weekly monitoring, you think you have won but the numbers are actually spiking. Weekly monitoring catches it BEFORE it explodes.
What is SAR Control de Plagas' control strategy?+

Why is vacuuming essential?+
It reduces the population immediately without chemicals. A HEPA-filter vacuum removes adults, nymphs, droppings (which also reveal where they are hiding) and egg cases.
